We are currently accepting applications for the following positions:

Financial Manager
Communications Representative
Publicity Coordinator
Web Content Manager

The time-commitment for each position varies and depends on publication schedules. However, you can expect to spend approximately 5-10 hours each week, working either on your own or with one of your fellow editors. You should also factor in monthly editorial meetings, where each member of the group is required to provide updates, brainstorm, and discuss relevant issues.

Art/Photo Editor

  • Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
    • Involvement in the Montreal artistic community (this editor will be Scrivener’s primary connection to artists).
    • Knowledge of various genres of art and photography; the candidate will be expected to discuss their preferences with regards to artistic form and style.
    • (Preferred) Have a portfolio of original work (especially photography, but all artistic mediums welcomed).
    • (Preferred) Experience with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Solicit and select artwork &photography to appear in Scrivener.
  • Work with the rest of Art & Design team on design concepts.
  • Help the event planner to find local artists for art events.
  • Book Review Editor

    • Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
      • Excellent written skills, in addition to experience writing reviews.
      • Knowledge of contemporary writing.
      • Copy-editing experience.
    • Solicit review copies from publishing companies
    • Work closely with a McGill professor to organize book review writing workshops.
    • Form and oversee a book review staff that will write additional reviews.
    • Write 1 book review (aprox. 500 words) per issue.
    • Edit each review that will be printed in Scrivener.

    Fiction Editor

    • Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
      • Knowledge of contemporary fiction and prose theory.
      • Excellent written communication.
    • Develop a set of standards with which submissions will be evaluated.
    • Form and lead a reading group that will meet regularly to evaluate Fiction submissions.
    • Help the Coordinating Editors organize Reading series and run a writing competition.

    Poetry Editor

    • Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
      • Knowledge of contemporary poetry and poetics.
      • Excellent written communication.
    • Develop a set of standards with which submissions will be evaluated.
    • Form and lead a reading group that will meet regularly to evaluate Poetry submissions.
    • Help the Coordinating Editors organize Reading series and run a writing competition.

    Financial Manager

    • Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
      • Prior experience managing and balancing accounts.
      • Knowledge of funding sources within the McGill community is essential.
      • Excellent written skills.
      • (Preferred) Should be pursuing a major or minor in finance, management or a related field.
    • Produce a budget with the coordinating editors.
    • Balance Scrivener’s account (monitor allocation of funds) and present monthly financial statements at editorial meetings.
    • Solicit Intra-McGill funding.

    Design Artist

    • Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
      • Experience in graphic design and layout (InDesign, Photoshop, and/or Illustrator).
      • A portfolio of original work is required.
      • (Preferred) Artistic experience in photography, painting, or drawing.
    • Working closely with the rest of the design team, the Promotional Artist will be responsible for presenting original design ideas and assisting in their execution.
    • Design a logo and letterhead for the Review.
    • Produce business cards for the editorial board.

    Illustrator

    • Work closely with the rest of the design team to produce original art for posters, covers, and pieces that will appear within each issue.
    • N.B. The inclusion of a writing sample is not required for this position.

    Layout & Design Coordinator

    • Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
      • Extensive experience with layout software (InDesign, Illustrator and/or Photoshop).
      • A portfolio of layout, graphic design, or other relevant work.
    • Coordinate layout and design of issues as well as that of posters.
    • Work with printers and solicit print quotes where necessary.
    • N.B. Candidates must recognize that this position requires working according to strict deadlines. They must be willing to accommodate print schedules.

    Advertising Agent

    • Candidates should demonstrate:
      • Excellent written skills.
    • Solicit advertisements to appear in Scrivener and on the website.

    Distribution Manager

    • Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
      • Excellent communication skills (especially written).
      • Experience managing or balancing accounts.
      • Knowledge of the publishing industry.
    • Manage account with distributor (monitoring how issues are placed nationally).
    • Mail issues to distributor.
    • Compile a list of local booksellers and place issues on consignment at each.
    • Manage consignment forms and follow up each month on local placements.
    • Keep a record of all sales.
    • [Extra] Research an alternative way of distributing the Review.

    Subscriptions Manager

    • Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
      • Excellent communication skills.
      • Experience working with Excel.
      • Knowledge of the publishing industry.
    • Keep a record of all subscriptions.
    • Manage EBSCO & SWETS (subscription agents) accounts.
    • Mail issues to subscribers and update spreadsheets with relevant information regularly.
    • Solicit new subscriptions from University Libraries.
    • [Extra] Design a subscription program for general public.

    Communications Representative

    • Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
      • Excellent written skills.
      • [Preferred] Experience in public relations.
    • Drafting texts for mass emails, press releases, and other communication pieces.
    • Write a monthly update for those who subscribe to the Review’s mailing list.

    Event Planner (x2)

    • Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
      • Knowledge of Montreal art and concert venues.
      • Experience planning and organizing social events.
      • Excellent written skills.
    • Organize all of Scrivener’s events (such as launch-parties, fundraisers, readings, art events, and movie nights).
    • Book venues and talent (music and readers).
    • Work with Publicity and Design Teams to coordinate production of promotional material for each event.
    • Create a calendar of events to present at editorial meetings and post on website.

    Publicity Coordinator

    • Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
      • Experience in communications or publicity.
    • Create a program to publicize calls for submissions, events, and upcoming issues of the Review. The program should take a advantage of a number of publicity opportunities (such as online forums, McGill Newspapers, on and off campus postering, and class announcements).
    • Solicit print quotes for flyers, posters, business cards, and other forms of print material.
    • Work with the event planners to coordinate promotional material and projects.
    • Form and a lead a team of volunteers that will put up posters around McGill and Montreal.

    Web Content Manager

    • Candidates should be able to demonstrates:
      • Excellent written skills.
      • Familiarity with HTML and other online languages.
    • Post news and information.
    • Organize and secure content for website.
    • Solicit McGill writers for various online projects such as McGill Writer of the month, opinion pieces and serials.
